Melbourne’s Turkish Community and the wider Victorian community came out in record numbers to see the eye-catching tulip blooms and take part in the fascinating culture of Turkey during the Tesselaar Tulip Festival - Turkish Weekend held at the Tesselaar Garden in Melbourne on Saturday and Sunday, 13-14 September 2008.
Now on its fourth year, the Festival was organised by the Australian Turkish Cultural Platform (ATCP) with the support of various organisations that included the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, Australian Multicultural Foundation and private businesses.
The in-depth Festival program showcasing the best of Turkish culture was a hit among the estimated 10,000 people who attended the event. Some of the highlights were: performances by 10 bands, folk dances, skits by Nasreddin Hodja, the master of Turkish humorists, Ottoman Army Band costume display, a fashion show, demonstration of Turkish marbling by two artists, demonstration of Turkish calligraphy by Dr. Süleyman Berk, exhibit by award-winning Turkish miniature artist Gülay Pelin and more.
His Excellency Murat Ersavci, Turkish Ambassador to Australia, delivered a speech and Ibrahim Yazar from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism lent significant support to the event.
UBI World TV’s top-rating in-house produced Turkish TV channel, Vizyon, covered the festival along with Channel 9’s Garden Gurus program, Turkish Radio and Television (TRT) News and Australia Post TV.
