A record crowd of thousands flocked to the Victoria Markets in Melbourne on Sunday, 29 March 2009 to take part in the second Turkish Pazar Festival celebrating 40 years of Turkish migration to Australia.
The very first Turks that came to the country were Cypriot Turks, now marking three generations of Turkish immigration to Australia.
Australia’s Turkish community celebrated the historic event for the second straight year with a sensational showcase of Turkish artistry, music, dance, crafts and cuisine.
Australian government officials and Turkish community leaders delivered speeches during the program – all in unison in acknowledging the big contribution of the Turkish community to Australia’s economy and rich multicultural heritage. The speakers included Multiculturalism Australia Commission chairman George Lekakis, Melbourne City Council Vice President Susan Riley and Melbourne Consul General of Turkey Ayd?n Nurhan. Local Turkish musicians, singers and bands also performed at the event.
